Freshen up the Congregation Beth Emek Library

Where do we shelve Talmud?

That was a question that came up when I started working on this project in earnest.

The first thing to notice is that I need to contact Bob Russman as it is he and his family that built our wonderful library and brief him on the Talmud Project and get his input.  Ellen Kiefer pointed this out to me and she's exactly right.  I need to get coordinated with Bob Russman right away.

I have contacted a librarian I know in San Jose and asked her if there are such things as a freelance librarian we could hire, have them organize our library from top to bottom, and "install" a process the congregants can follow to maintain the library thereafter.  This is the reply I received:

Hi, Brian,

Ooh, this sounds like a job for a Library School intern, if that's something your synagogue might consider. Way back in the mid-80's I had an internship with the local American Lung Association, who needed help organizing their own nonprofit library. It was a fun and interesting way for me to get college credits and I hope I helped the agency at the same time. For a list of current northern california internships, see: http://slisweb.sjsu.edu/classes/294/nocalif/nocalinterns.htm

For more info on internships, see: http://slisweb.sjsu.edu/classes/294/libr294index.htm

I think that some sites pay for an intern and some don't. If you want to pay a freelance librarian/information specialist or consultant, you might try Advanced Information Management (AIM) in Mountain View, which is a temporary employment agency for librarians. AIM's web site is at http://aimusa.com

I hope that helps!

I've also had a conversation with Sally Brown and Sally told me about a library she knows who is a specialist in Jewish libraries.  The librarian's name is Eleanor Tandowsky and she lives in Pleasanton and works at the San Leandro public library.  I need to find her.
